A Day That Slowed Down: An Intimate Wedding in the Ozarks
Some weddings feel special the moment you walk in the door. Lacey and Austin’s day was one of those. It was quietly meaningful, deeply intentional, and honestly hard to put into words because of how personal it felt to be there.
It was a true honor that Lacey trusted me to photograph her vision. She has spent the last decade working as a planner within the wedding industry and has seen every version of production, pressure, and performance that can come with large-scale celebrations. Because of that, she knew exactly what she did not want. What she chose instead was something slower, more present, and deeply rooted in meaning.
Their wedding took place at a private Airbnb tucked into the Ozark Mountains in Jasper, Arkansas, near the Buffalo River. Even in winter, with bare trees and muted tones, the landscape was beautiful. The home itself, Highlands Retreat, was designed by a husband and wife architecture and interior design team, which made the space feel thoughtful, clean, and artfully restrained. As someone who loves good design with a degree in interior design and with an architect husband of my own, that detail mattered to me. Lacey also studied interior design, so there was an unspoken shared language in the space.
The day was just four hours long, but it felt expansive, like time slowed down on purpose. When I arrived, it was just Lacey, her parents, and Austin quietly finishing florals and final touches. There was no rush and no timeline pressure, just presence. Lacey went upstairs to get ready, and photographing her details ended up being some of my favorite I have ever done. Everything was considered, meaningful, and deeply personal.
One of the most thoughtful elements of the day was scent. Lacey and Austin created custom perfume and cologne for their wedding, then blended those scents into candles for their guests. The candles burned throughout the entire day, filling the home with a scent that will forever hold the memory of this moment for them. Lacey was intentional about this because she understands how deeply smell is tied to memory, and it was one of the most beautiful, sensory-driven details I have ever witnessed at a wedding.
After getting ready, Lacey and Austin shared a quiet first look upstairs with just the two of them. From there, the day unfolded organically. We took family photos, paused when we wanted to, laughed, sat together, and simply enjoyed being present. There was no agenda beyond asking if we wanted to take a few more photos or if it felt right to just hang out for a bit.
The only other vendor present was their private chef, Isaac, who prepared an intimate meal for the evening. He and I quickly bonded over how honored we both felt to be there. Lacey even helped prepare dessert with him while I documented it all, another reminder that this day was not about performance but participation.
As the sun began to set, the ceremony took place inside the living room. Lacey walked down a spiral staircase and met Austin at the bottom, and together they walked forward to begin their ceremony. She timed it perfectly. The light shifted as they exchanged vows, moving from soft daylight into rich sunset hues over the mountains. The room glowed. It felt effortless, sacred, and perfectly aligned.
Afterward, we stepped outside briefly to capture portraits in the last light, colors Lacey was especially excited about, before returning inside for dinner. The lights were dimmed, candles flickered throughout the space, and the atmosphere felt warm and deeply relaxed. The meal was beautiful, the conversation unhurried, and the energy peaceful.
Throughout the day, Lacey kept saying how easy everything felt. There was no stress and no pressure. It was simply time with family, Austin, and the space she had so thoughtfully created. Seeing her so happy and present was incredibly meaningful to witness.
This celebration was only the beginning. In July, I will be traveling with them to Italy to photograph the next chapter of their story, followed by a lake-day reception with friends later this summer. Being invited into each of these moments feels surreal and deeply humbling.
Lacey and Austin’s wedding was a reminder that beauty does not need to be loud to be powerful. Sometimes the most meaningful celebrations are the quiet ones, the ones that leave space to feel everything fully.
